Level 5 Reflection

In this blog post I will be going over my previous year at Southampton Solent Univeristy studying BA (Hons) Makeup and Hair Design reflecting on my performance and addressing areas in which I have excelled and areas that need improvement. I'd like to outline the areas that I want to focus on this upcoming year to ensure that my skills as an artist improve and my current skills grow. I've found that in the past year confidence is key in every aspect of life and to succeed you have to believe in your skill and put yourself forward for things that might scare or challenge you and I really hope to embrace this way of looking at things this coming year.

Reflection

My attitude towards make-up and hair has changed dramatically in the past year. This is I think because now I look at make-up and hair on a more technical and passionate level. Before starting at Solent I loved make-up and hair was something I always wanted to be good at but never really went for, make-up as a way of expressing myself and making others look good from working for make-up brands and doing freelance work. However now I see that make-up can entice emotion, feeling, theme, mood and so many other things except look pretty on a model's face. It's about putting that idea into action and making it come alive with colour, texture and mood.
My skill has improved and I feel my organisational skills have flourished also as before I felt my organisational skills were a bit all over the place. Writing has also been a big part of the last year and having to write blog posts most nights has brought me out of my comfort zone and I've learnt to write like me and I feel like I'm still trying to find my writing style even now. An example of this from my previous blog pages is:

Technically I feel like I'm doing well however I do have a feeling that I need to be doing more freelance work and taking advantage of opportunities made available to us on our course group page for upcoming work in the industry. A lot of this stems down to working full time over the summer but I plan to make more free time to explore my skills even in my downtime on the weekends etc to expand my photography skills (as this is something I really enjoy!) and to get into the studio more. Through working with other people this year I have also learnt that you have to remain focused no matter what happens for example people can let you down at the last minute and you need to prepared for the worst if it happens and I coped pretty well in that sort of situation when it came to my practical assessments last year.

If I could do anything different in the past year I would have made more time to create and more time to develop my skills outside of University and to make the most out of Solent's resources and the creative people around me to collaborate with. I think the main reason why would be confidence if I'm honest with myself but pushing myself to do things will create confidence and I need to make the most of my time at University with the amazingly talented people and resources to work with.

My best moment in the past year was designing and shooting my Digital Image Production ads for an eyeliner campaign and Miss Dior. I really enjoyed creating my moodboards and shooting the looks. For the eyeliner campaign I worked within a team and we captured images that we were all really happy and excited about. My Miss Dior look went really well and the overall images and moodboard looked exactly how I pictured them.

To conclude this next year is going to be about developing my skills as an artist but also as a writer as  I am going to be looking into Digital Beauty and Editorial writing this year and I really want to push myself and see what happens! To do this I think I need to feel free to write about whatever on my blog whether it's an idea I've had or something I want to talk about and this hopefully will get my creative writing to the next level. When I return for second year I think I will move my focus from work to Uni and try to balance things a little more for example over summer after second year I will lessen my days to make time for freelance work. This past summer I've been working quite alot at MAC in Southampton which has really enabled me to work on my skill every day with different faces and looks to create. Moving forward at work I plan to complete my MAC certifications to eventually apply to be part of the MAC events team when I leave Uni. But pushing myself till then will get me there!

Overall this year has been really enjoyable and I can't wait to see what second year has to offer me!
